This modern living space was designed for a couple who loves to entertain. Blurring the lines between kitchen, family room, and lounge, the design shapes the way the family lives, gathers, and connects. Inspired by Japanese design principles, the material palette emphasizes natural textures, craftsmanship, and simplicity. Custom cerused oak cabinetry, Calacatta porcelain slabs, and carefully curated lighting create a warm, grounded atmosphere that feels more like a lounge than a traditional kitchen. The natural materials and restrained detailing evoke a sense of calm while celebrating the beauty of everyday rituals. The lines of the custom millwork flow seamlessly throughout the space, making it difficult to tell where the kitchen ends and the living area begins or perhaps it’s the other way around. The result is an environment that encourages connection, whether you’re preparing appetizers with friends, enjoying a cocktail by the hearth, or watching the children play near the custom playroom shelving. One of the project’s greatest challenges was working around existing mechanical systems and limited ceiling height. By introducing a floating beamed ceiling inspired by the clean horizontal lines found in Japanese architecture, the design draws the eye outward and creates the illusion of a larger, more expansive space. The result is a home that feels open, welcoming, and effortlessly connected to the rhythms of daily life.
